Buddy’s First Hip Replacement Surgery A Success!

“I heard this ‘Wham! Wham! Wham! when I stepped into the kennel area of the shelter and looked straight into the brown eyes of a big ol’ dog wagging his tail so hard it was shaking the wire wall,” says Wendy, “Oh my! I introduced myself to Buddy. That was it. I wanted him to come home with me right then.”

Thanks to the generous donations of many community members we were able to raise over $10,000 toward Buddy’s hip replacement surgery—giving this lovable 100-pound Mastiff cross a new lease on life!

Buddy’s first surgery took place on August 23rd, and we’re happy to report that he is up and about and doing exceptionally well.

According to Buddy’s veterinarian he is progressing better than expected. “He looks like he’s ready to get hooked up to a dog sled and run in the Iditarod!” says Dr. Hight, after being slathered with Buddy kisses. Buddy has full range of motion in his affected hip but still needs to strengthen the muscles there before his second surgery, hopefully in a few weeks.

Wendy Easley fell in love with Buddy several months ago and has been visiting with him regularly ever since. “(When I adopt Buddy) he will have a green lawn to romp on, and long walks and beach adventures,” says Wendy. “He’ll have a warm soft bed, and all the love I can give him. I look forward to the day when I can walk him through the door and say, ‘Buddy, you’re home now.’” We hope that Buddy can go home with Wendy soon after his second surgery is completed.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Buddy Fund!

Oogy the Dog - An Enduring Tale
I realized then that Oogy probably did not know he had not died and gone to heaven. So I told him. I said, 'Listen pal. It only gets better after this.'When Oogy was four months old and weighed thirty five pounds he was tied to a stake and used as bait for a Pit Bull. The left side of his face from just behind his eye was torn off, including his ear. He was bitten so hard a piece of his jaw bone was crushed. Afterward, he was thrown into a cage and left to bleed to death.

I am not a religious man, but I can only conclude that at that moment God turned around and paid attention. The police raided the facility, found Oogy, and took him to Ardmore Animal Hospital, where Dr. Bianco stitched him up and saved him. This coincided with the last weekend of life for our cat, Buzzy, who was 14 at the time. My sons and I had taken Buzzy to AAH for his last visit. The staff had gathered Buzzy in when out comes this pup that looked like nothing more than a gargoyle. He covered us with kisses. The boys and I fell instantly in love with him. more ...

Donate Your Old Cell Phone

Support Our Recycling Fundraiser

We are facilitating a fundraiser program that recycles cell phones, ink cartridges, DVD movies & video games, laptop computers, MP3 players, digital cameras, camcorders, video game consoles, etc. By participating in our recycling program, you are also protecting the air and water from potentially harmful consumer electronic waste. Recycled cell phones and ink jet cartridges are properly disposed in accordance with state and federal EPA guidelines. Not only are you protecting the environment, but you are also providing the less fortunate a means of obtaining an inexpensive cell phone. The proceeds will benefit the voucher programs and the cost of taking care of the animals in the facility. Donations are tax deductible.

For your convenience, we can pick up your donated electronic devices in large quantities. You can also drop them off at the facility located at 6073 Loma Ave. in Eureka. For further details, please call 442-1782.

Cat Trivia...
Cats can be taught to walk on a leash, but a lot of time and patience is required to teach them.

Dog Trivia...
Mixed breeds" and "Cross breeds" are NOT the same. Mixed breed dogs have various lineage that is most likely unknown, as for cross breds, they are only 2 different breeds of dogs combined together. Mixed breed dogs are less likely to suffer from inherited diseases and disabilities than purebred dogs are.
