Sharon & Spike—Companions for Life
Sharon Chadwick and her husband Gary have had animals ever since they were first married 35 years ago. They started out with three pet mice and progressed from there to cats, dogs and pygmy goats. They have had as many as seven cats, one dog and three pygmy goats at one time. Now they share their home with a dog named Spike and a kitten named Jezabelle.
Sharon has been severely hearing impaired since birth so when she learned about service dogs for the deaf, she was excited. She visited the San Francisco SPCA’s Hearing Dog Program while attending a conference in the Bay Area in 1992. She was so impressed that she immediately filled out an application. She went to San Francisco in June 1993 to be trained with her hearing dog, Spike (see photo). Spike is a Cocker/Springer spaniel mix whose job is to alert Sharon to sounds like smoke detectors, doorbells, telephones, and alarm clocks. He became well known at Humboldt State University where he accompanied Sharon to her job as a science librarian. He also traveled all over the country with Sharon to meetings and conferences. Now 16 years old, Spike is enjoying his retirement as a dog of leisure.
Supporters of the Sequoia Humane Society for many years, Sharon, Gary & Spike participate in the Mutt Strut fundraiser each September. Spike was a homeless puppy in the Solano County Animal Shelter before the San Francisco SPCA saw his potential as a hearing dog and enriched Sharon’s life immensely. The Chadwicks are happy to do what they can for the homeless animals of Humboldt County. They have contributed to the hip replacement surgery fund for Buddy and hope that Buddy will soon be in his forever home. Every homeless animal deserves to have the chance to enrich someone’s life as much as Spike has enriched the Chadwicks’ lives!
