Recliners Can Be A Danger For Pets
Just when I thought I knew everything there was to know about safe operation of recliners around cats, I learned my lesson in a most dramatic episode.
Rico and I are both okay and good friends again after a recent unintended encounter with a Lazy-Boy. While raising myself from the usually friendly recliner, my dear, sleek, furry, black kitty, supine on the floor below, attacked my hands ferociously and repeatedly, as well as my aging frail Sofi-cat. Both aghast at what appeared to be a deal-breaking breech of trust, neither Rico nor I knew what was happening or how to make it end. Screaming his name until my throat hurt and dripping in blood from his deep bites and scratches, I suddenly realized that I was up and out of the chair – shaking, as I rushed to rinse my wounds. I was terrified of him, while he hid behind a cabinet.
Only hours later, lying in the emergency room, did the light dawn: something from the chair was hurting him or he couldn’t have done it. While I still had no idea what had actually happened, a great relief came over me as I realized that he wasn’t rabid or insane. My husband, prince and animal-lover that he is, determined I was in good hands in the ER, and said he was going home “to check on the cats.”
Later, upon closer inspection of the Lazy Boy, we discovered a hidden extension at the foot of the recliner that emerges when the sitter arises and the leg rest lowers -- where Rico had been trapped on his back facing up toward me when he clawed and bit to escape the pressure of the flap/trap.
During this surreal but somewhat restful episode, I realized that animals don’t freak out for no reason. What’s the moral of the story? Your pets are speaking to you, even if you don’t understand their language. And even ordinary household items can hold danger for our four-legged friends—beware, and make sure your home is safe for your pets.
