Welcome to the Sequoia Humane Society’s Feline Photo Olympics!
The Sequoia Humane Society's "Feline Photo Olympics" is a fund raising event where cats help raise funds for their less fortunate feline friends.
Cats participate in an appropriately laid back fashion. To enter the Feline Photo Olympics, all they need to do is ensure their person (aka servant) selects one or more events in which the cat excels, and submit a photo of the cat putting on its best performance in that event. Events include Power Yawning, Synchronized Sleeping, Feline Water Sports, Cat Aerobics, TP Wrestling, and the ever-popular Freestyle category.
How to Enter
Start by picking out your best – funniest, cutest, silliest – photos of your cat (or cats!). Is your cat an acrobat or a power yawner? Do your pets snuggle together? Does your feisty feline like to attack the toilet paper or drink from the faucet? So break out the camera and start snapping photos. And remember, no two or four legged creatures should be harmed (or annoyed) in the making of this picture!
Once you have your photo(s) picked out, go to our website and create an account, then you can post as many pictures as you like!

Including the Sequoia Humane Society in your will or estate plan is a meaningful way to help us help our animal friends. You can become a powerful force in the welfare of generations of animals across Humboldt County. Your gift can help rescue abandoned animals, nurture abused pets, find forever homes for companion animals, and help end the unnecessary killing of cats and dogs.
Tom Heilmann supports the Sequoia Humane Society with a generous annual gift. “Animals are important to me and I like to be part of the good work that the Sequoia Humane Society is doing to save animals’ lives and make Humboldt County a better place for our 4-legged friends,” says Tom. “And I don’t want that support to stop when I’m gone. I’ve included the Sequoia Humane Society in my estate planning so that I can continue to help cats and dogs for a long time to come.”
When you include the Sequoia Humane Society in your estate planning, you’ll become part of our “Pets Forever” legacy society – a memorial to your commitment to help the animals on the North Coast.

There’s nothing like wat ching a pair of kittens chasing each other up and down the hallway, or playing hide and seek around the corner of the couch.
During the month of July adopt two kittens for the price of one at the Sequoia Humane Society’s Pet Adoption Center – you’ll get twice the fun, and you’re helping us make space for the flood of kittens that fills our shelter to overflowing this time of year.
Kittens are very social animals and benefit from the company of others their age. You’ll not only save money on the adoption fee – which includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping and much more – you’ll get hours of free entertainment!
We’re also extending our “1/2 price special” on adult cats – adopt a cat over 6 months old and pay only $50!

Visit our website at http://www.sequoiahumane.org to view photos of pets available for adoption. |

About 6 months ago we adopted Tanner from the Sequoia Humane Society. He was a great little pup part German Shepherd and we kinda think Siberian for the other half. We changed his name to a good German name, "Axl." We hired a great trainer who helped us immensely with his excessive energy. He still has loads of energy but is working on his impulse control very hard.
We love this little dog and he really loves his new home too. He enjoys talking to his neighbor dog Zeke through the knotholes in the fence. He also loves to see all his buddies out at his favorite doggie day care. He looks forward to going there every Saturday and letting us sweep up all the Axl mess for another week. He visits with his best friend Bruce, a Pit Bull and his family every Sunday and enjoys making friends every place he goes, both two legged and four legged. We cannot go to the pet store without Axl attracting at least one lady to pet on him. He is a Don Juan and he knows it. He has adopted my easy chair as his favorite place in the house and enjoys a laid back afternoon watching the dogs on the Animal Planet channel. He barks at the dogs on TV.
Axl is 60 lbs now and still growing. I hope for 70 but no matter he is a great friend. He is the first dog I have ever had who walks well on the leash. That was not easy but we work with him on walks often. Hope you enjoy the photo and thank you for our family addition. Dave Smith

As promised, here is what I (and my friends and family) think is the very best vegan dessert ever made. I have become rather well-known in my own little circle for this recipe and am often asked to make "the tart." I can't take too much credit though, it was easy to veganize from a recipe published in one of our local papers, the North Coast Journal, a couple of years ago.

Crust: 1-1/2 cups flour 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons powdered sugar 3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) soy margarine

"Watch out! You nearly broadsided that car!" My father yelled at me. "Can't you do anything right?"german-shorthaired-pointer Those words hurt worse than blows. I turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me, daring me to challenge him. A lump rose in my throat as I averted my eyes. I wasn't prepared for another battle. 'I saw the car, Dad. Please don't yell at me when I'm driving.' My voice was measured and steady, sounding far calmer than I really felt. Dad glared at me, then turned away and settled back. At home I left Dad in front of the television and went outside to collect my thoughts. Dark, heavy clouds hung in the air with a promise of rain. The rumble of distant thunder seemed to echo my inner turmoil. What could I do about him?

They were homeless. Just another displaced family, a victim of the economic recession.
And like many families with pets, they had nowhere to go. Most homeless shelters don’t take 4-legged family members, and those that do have limited space. With five cats and two dogs, their options were very limited.
They were especially concerned for “Asia”, a young Siamese kitty who was “in a family way”. She’d had two other litters and the kittens had died. They didn’t have enough money to take her to a veterinarian, but they were worried she might have problems again, and might not have enough milk for the kittens.
They came to the Sequoia Humane Society looking for help. We didn’t have room for all of their pets, but we took the momma kitty and immediately started giving her fluids and high energy canned food to help her build up her strength.
